VPSO bill signed into law

By KTVA CBS 11 News 9:31 PM July 18, 2014
ANCHORAGE –

The bill allowing village public safety officers to carry firearms was signed into law Friday.

Gov. Sean Parnell signed House Bill 199, which does away with previous regulations prohibiting VPSOs from carrying firearms.

The new law does not require VPSOs to carry guns — it leaves the decision up to the communities where they work and the regional Native associations.

The governor says this bill will help make all of Alaska’s communities safer.

HB 199 — sponsored by Rep. Bryce Edgmon following the 2013 shooting death of a Manokotak VPSO — passed the Senate and House unanimously. It takes effect in 90 days.
