The USS Anchorage held a change of command ceremony on Friday in San Diego, California.
Cmdr. Joel Stewart relinquished command to Capt. Michael McKenna, according to a release.
USS Anchorage is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship. The U.S. Navy warship is named for the city of Anchorage.
“It’s a great honor to have a ship named after our amazing city,” said Lindsey Whitt, communications director for Port of Anchorage.
Whitt has been involved with the city’s namesake ship for the past three years. She is pictured above with three USS Anchorage captains, including its first commanding officer, Capt. Brian J. Quin.
“It’s greater to know the men and women who serve on this vessel and to be able to call them friends,” said Whitt. “They deserve our highest respect.”
