State budget problems have found athletics. The University of Alaska Men and Women’s skiing and indoor track and field teams could be cut after 2016-17 year.
The announcement was made this week by UA president Jim Johnsen and University of Alaska Anchorage athletics director Keith Hackett.
UAA is petitioning the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for a waiver to lower the minimum number of teams from 13 to nine. The final decision will come about these programs in early November.
In the meantime, skiing’s Sparky Anderson and track and field’s Michael Friess sat down with KTVA’s Dave Goldman to make their teams’ cases.
