This weekend, a pair of sophomore gymnasts from the University of Alaska Anchorage are set to extend their seasons at national and international competitions.
Seattle native Stefany Bryan and Austrian athlete Simone Penker are preparing to compete at the NCAA regional and European and World Championships qualifying meets, respectively. Both athletes said they see the competitions as opportunities to benefit the Seawolf gymnastics program and expand their competitive prowess.
Bryan, now on scholarship after walking on to the team last year, will be the only UAA gymnast at the NCAA meet. Penker will be competing more than 5,000 miles away.
But while the athletes test their skills on opposite sides of the globe, they said they’re united by a common goal.
