Two men seriously injured in Glenn Highway rollover

By KTVA CBS 11 News 12:10 PM June 4, 2014
EUREKA –

Two Matanuska Valley men were ejected from their vehicle and seriously injured following a single-vehicle rollover crash near Eureka Tuesday afternoon.

Alaska State Troopers said 21-year-old Wasilla resident Ryan Palmer and 19-year-old Palmer resident Michael Sunderland were driving south on the Glenn Highway near mile 116 when their 1999 Subaru Legacy drove down an embankment, rolled several times and finally came to a rest after striking a tree around 4 p.m. According to trooper dispatch, a crew of Chena Hotshot firefighters were passing by when they came across the crash scene. Along with their two medics and a U.S. Air Force physician from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, troopers said the Chena crew was able to extinguish a fire caused by the crash and care for the injured men until two LifeMed helicopters arrived at the scene.

Both Palmer and Sunderland were taken to Providence Hospital. Troopers said neither man was wearing a seatbelt, and the crash remains under investigation.
