Sam Bernitz, 15, is a Make-A-Wish recipient
Apparently 15-year-old Sam Bernitz doesn’t mind the cold weather. The Make-A-Wish Alaska recipient probably could have gone just about anywhere. He decided to go to Antarctica.
“I’ve always really liked penguins,” Sam said with a smile. ”Second of all, Antarctica just seems like a super cool place. And it has tons of wildlife and scenery and I never thought I’d ever get to go there. Now I have the chance.”
Make-A-Wish Alaska said the teenager has been diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition requiring multiple open-heart surgeries. On Monday Sam got to hear about Antarctic wildlife as part of a V.I.P. presentation at the Alaska Zoo to prepare him for his big trip. Sam said he will take a raft onto land from the boat every day and do lots of hiking. His journey begins Jan. 1.
