Hang around Mulcahy Stadium this weekend and you’ll hear “play ball!” plenty. The 23rd annual BP Invitational features eight teams– six of which are from Alaska. The other two hail from Walla Walla, Washington, and Napoleon, Ohio.
“As a player, it was awesome to come into the tournament and play against outside teams.” said tournament director Sagan Osborne.
He should know. He was part of the last Dimond team to win the tournament in 2010.
And there’s motivation.
“Everybody always says Alaska players aren’t as good. Then you get to show that you are as good and you get to play high-quality games late in the season to get ready for a playoff run,” he said.
East Head Coach Kurt Holberg agrees.
“This is the best showcase that we have– the BP,” he said. “ You gotta be in the top four from the year before to be in it.”
The T-Birds defeated Service 3-2.
Dimond topped Chugiak 11-1.
Friday has a full slate of five games beginning at 9:15 a.m.
