Expect a little more bike traffic on Anchorage roads Wednesday, when hundreds Alaskan kids and teachers alike are expected to participate in National Bike to School Day.
Ben Harris of the Anchorage School District said 60 schools districtwide are set to participate in the annual event. That’s the highest rate in the nation, he said.
“We just want to encourage kids to find a healthy alternative to get to school,” he said. “Do it safely and reduce traffic and congestion and pollution, and hop on your bike and ride to school. Pretty simple.”
Students are required to wear helmets and encouraged to wear bright clothing. Harris said parents are invited to accompany their children on the ride.
