A Juneau man was found dead floating in Gastineau Channel Sunday afternoon, with police still trying to determine how he ended up in the water.

The man was identified early Sunday evening by police as 53-year-old Ricardo Willard. Police said in a statement that he was found just after 1:15 p.m. floating near U.S. Coast Guard Station Juneau on Egan Drive.

“It was reported that the body was floating about 50 feet from the shore,” police wrote.

JPD Officer Nick Garza said dispatchers were first informed of Willard’s body by a passerby on a nearby bike path who called police. Although police are awaiting autopsy results to determine how long Willard had been in the channel, Garza said there wasn’t anything immediately suspicious about his death.

“There’s no signs of trauma, no signs of injury, no signs that make us believe anyone was involved,” Garza said.

Willard’s body will be sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Anchorage, police said.
