The Anchorage School District will host three informational meetings on proposed school start time changes this month. The first will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Gruening Middle School in Eagle River.

The district has been considering these changes this year, starting with focus groups and open house meetings in various communities.

At the May 7 board meeting, a consultant presented two options. One month later, the board issued its recommendation.

The proposed changes would push high school start times back a half an hour to 8 a.m. Elementary school times would start next at 8:45 a.m.; middle school would start at 9:30 a.m.

The selected option was deemed a compromise between the sleep needs of students and the desire to avoid significant disruption in current family schedules.

The board will take its final vote next month. If changes are approved, the new start times will be implemented in the 2019-20 school year.

Other meetings will be held Sept. 17 at Lake Otis Elementary and Sept. 18 at South High School.
