Breakfast honors Alaska Special Olympics leaders
Special Olympics honored its Alaska supporters Wednesday at the second annual Breakfast with Champions.
The event was held at the Special Olympics Alaska Sports, Health and Wellness Center.
“Everybody in this room represents the thousands of people that make this program happen,” said Special Olympics Alaska President/CEO Nicolle Egan.
Among the honors mentioned at Wednesday’s breakfast was the first Jim Balamaci Legacy Award, presented to late U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens’ family and foundation.
Egan says the center where the athletes work out and where the breakfast was held is affectionately called “Jim’s Gym.”
Balamaci, the longtime president of Special Olympics Alaska, died unexpectedly in February.
