The driver of a motorcycle was killed Thursday evening in a Sterling collision with a pickup truck, Alaska State Troopers said.

Alaska State Troopers said Friday that Sterling resident Michael Corteg, 60, was the man killed in the crash.

Word of the wreck, at Joyfull Circle and Peacefull Lane, reached troopers at about 5 p.m. Thursday according to an online dispatch. The pickup truck involved was turning left from Joyfull onto Sandline and saw Corteg's BMW motorcycle approaching on Peacefull.

“The driver of the pickup attempted to swerve left to avoid a collision. The motorcycle also swerved left, and struck the front passenger side of the truck,” troopers wrote. “The motorcyclist was ejected off the bike and landed off the road, sustaining serious, life-threatening injuries, to which they succumbed at the scene.”

Corteg was wearing a helmet during the crash, troopers said. His next of kin have been notified.

Editor's note: Alaska State Troopers have corrected street references to the location of the crash from those in an initial trooper dispatch.
