Witnesses, responders pull man from Gastineau Channel
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - A man knocked unconscious was rescued from the waters of Juneau's Gastineau Channel with the help of bystanders and emergency responders.
Juneau police say alcohol was a factor in the incident shortly after 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Several people were on a downtown dock when a 49-year-old man fell backward, hit his head on a pipe and fell unconscious into the water. Two men and a woman jumped in after him.
One of the men in the water held the head of the unconscious man out of the water and provided rescue breaths.
Two fire department water responders entered the water, helped the civilian rescuers climb onto the dock by ladder and aided the injured man, who regained consciousness.
The injured man and two rescuers were transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital.
