From 49 to 50, Bartlett opens football season a long way from home
Last year, they were California dreamin'. This summer, it's Aloha.
And the Bartlett Bears are busy trying to make it happen.
The state's reigning Division 1 state football champion will begin their season on August 11 at Baldwin High School on Maui.
But the trip won't come cheaply. Co-head coach Daniel Esparza says the price tag will reach at least $100,000 for the 50 players, or $2,000 apiece. So the hard work continues.
"Big thing right now is we do odd jobs around the city," he said. "We send our kids from Eklutna to Girdwood; they work jobs, raking lawns, they helped build a retaining wall last year."
For Esparza, it's a first time to the fiftieth state. His sideline partner, co-head coach John Jessen, is more familiar with it.
"I've never been to Hawaii, so, I thought, 'hey, this would be a great chance.' Coach J, Hawaii, it's his second home in Hawaii, he's just going back hanging out, he knows it." said Esparza.
