Fairbanks Police say a good Samaritan was threatened by a man with a machete after he got caught trying to break into cars on Wednesday.

According to an FPD spokesperson Yumi McCulloch, police were called after the good Samaritan reported that 38-year-old Rex Owen DeFrance was breaking into cars.

In the meantime, the caller began taking photos of DeFrance in action and when he realized what was happening, he chased after the good Samaritan with a machete.

"Another person saw that the suspect had a machete and others took cover," McCulloch wrote.

Prior to being arrested, he dropped machete and his backpack.

With the help of the Alaska State Troopers, FPD was able to arrest DeFrance on robbery in the first-degree and assault in the third-degree.

Based off of witness accounts, more assault charges are pending, McCulloch said.
