Alaska State Troopers say a woman is dead after old avalanche debris collapsed on her during a hike on Byron Glacier near Portage Lake in Portage Valley

According to AST spokesperson Megan Peters, troopers were notified just after 1 p.m. on Wednesday of a person being entrapped after large pieces of ice fell on them.

When troopers arrived, they found that multiple people had walked under a hollowed out compressed snow mass which resembled a snow cave.

"Brittany Katherine Boegel, age 32 of Minnesota, walked inside and under the mass, the snow ceiling fell, and mortally hurt her," troopers wrote in an online dispatch. "Two other people, a six year old boy, and an adult male received minor injuries."

Peters says off-duty nurses in the area were able to dig the woman out and attempted to revive her but were unsuccessful.

A LifeMed helicopter responded along with Forest Service and the Girdwood Fire Department.
