For the first time in Mt. Marathon history, the women outbid the men in the annual auction the night before the race.

Longtime race organizers say the record in the 100-plus year race is $4,500 for the men. Since the women don't usually bid high, the highest bid hasn't been recorded.

Tuesday night, the highest bid for any bib was the first of 20 race bibs, which went for $750 to the first woman. In contrast, the highest men's bib went for $650.

Longtime race organizers think that the bids for men are lower because a few years ago, the race committee switched from one entry per year to a weighted system. That, coupled with the men and women switching off for the prime time race spot at 2 p.m., has many longtime observers thinking that times have changed.
