A motorcycle ride turned fatal on the Sterling Highway Tuesday night, authorities say.

Clinton Salmon, 62, and Jason Thomas McWilliams, 47, both from Soldotna, were riding their 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycles when they lost control on a curved stretch of the highway and crashed into a ditch, according to Alaska State Troopers' online dispatch.

Troopers responded to the crash just before 9 p.m.

"Salmon was pronounced deceased at the scene," troopers wrote. "McWilliams suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment."

Troopers believe alcohol was a factor.

The investigation is ongoing.
