People who use the bike trails around town may notice they have some company.

Anchorage Police are reassigning school resource officers from the classroom to the trails.

Captain Michael Kerel said there are eight to 10 school resource officers available to patrol Anchorage parks and trails during the day. He said the officers will be sent to areas where people have reported trouble.

"We will take the officers and we will reassign them on a daily basis," said Kerel. "They will identify problems and take action on the problems, and if they don't find the problems, they'll just move on from there."

Kerel said the resource officers work a shift that runs from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. He said officers on the city's Community Action Policing (CAP) team may patrol trails in the evenings if they are available.
