A Florida-based sandwich chain with more than 1,100 locations is set to gain its first Alaska foothold in the Golden Heart City.

Firehouse Subs, a fast-casual franchise known for firefighter-themed sandwiches like the Hook and Ladder (turkey, ham and Monterey Jack cheese) and the Engineer (turkey, mushrooms and Swiss cheese), confirmed Wednesday that it will begin its Alaska presence with a Fairbanks store opening this year. An Alaska search on the website gives the new restaurant's location as a suite at 950 Old Steese Hwy.

The 44-state chain offers its sandwiches “fully involved,” with trimmings including mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato and onion, and donates some of its profits to a nonprofit fund for firefighting equipment.

Firehouse spokeswoman Brittany Mirvil didn’t have word on why the chain chose Fairbanks for its first location, but said by email that plans to open in Alaska’s largest city were in their early stages.

“Not sure when they will be opening yet, as the plans are still very preliminary, but don’t worry — Anchorage won’t be left out,” Mirvil wrote.
