Chuck Martin has extensive experience coaching boys high school basketball in the Mat-Su Valley area.

A former state champion, he's led teams at Houston, Wasilla and Colony. He's been to the college ranks at Division I Liberty where he took the Flames to an NCAA tournament. He's run the program at Masters College in California, an NAIA school. Then he came back to Palmer.

Now Anchorage is calling. And the veteran coach is taking his shot with East.

"I just think being in town, competing against Anchorage coaches, and schools, was an opportunity that doesn't come along very often," he said. "I loved the administration at Palmer, the people at Palmer High School."

But the pull of East was too strong and the chance to coach in Anchorage was one he could not let pass.

It's "traditionally rich," and when the possibility came up he, "thought about it for a few days, pursued it, and here we sit," he said.

Former West head man Antonio Wyche will serve as an assistant.

Martin is excited about next year but building something long-term and helping develop the kids is the plan.
