Toddler suffers shattered shoulder in Fairview drive-by
A 2-year-old little girl the family calls "Kapua” is stable after being wounded by a stray bullet in a drive-by shooting on Monday afternoon.
Kapua was in her home with family members when gunfire erupted outside the home. People in two separate vehicles, a red Dodge truck and a silver car, exchanged gunfire in the Fairview neighborhood near 11th Avenue and Hyder Street.
Kapua was hit while inside her home and quickly rushed to the hospital.
They say the bullet entered her arm and traveled to her shoulder which shattered her shoulder blade. A family member went on to say that she won't eat and is still traumatized-- she had a very high temperature Wednesday at 103.
"She’s opened her eyes a couple times,” a family member said Tuesday. “She also moved her fingers a little. She still hasn’t talked at all, so we are hoping she will say something-- a word or sentence-- soon.”
Kapua's mother is in the Lower 48 with Kapua's older sister, who was reportedly undergoing heart surgery.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family with medical expenses.
The family fears for its safety and currently does not wish to share their names at this time.
One of the vehicles, the red Dodge truck, was located by officers near Sunchase Street and Dowling Road. Anchorage Police confirmed it is indeed one of the suspect vehicles in the shooting. The truck was impounded as evidence and the driver detained for questioning by detectives and released.
The other vehicle is not accounted for, nor have police issued an official description of the vehicle. Surveillance video from a local business owner shows the two suspect vehicles in an apparent car chase.
The search continues for the suspects and the other vehicles. Police have not yet released any suspect descriptions.
Anyone with information regarding this crime, including surveillance video, is asked to call dispatch at 311. To remain anonymous you may contact Crime Stoppers at 561-STOP or online.
