One person is dead after an accident happened at a landfill in the Valley Monday morning, authorities say. 

According to a statement from Mat-Su Valley Borough spokesperson Patty Sullivan, the death occurred at the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Central Landfill located at 1201 N 49th State St. in Palmer just after 9 a.m.

"A contractor was baling scrap metal at the landfill when the incident occurred. The worker was an employee of the contractor. The contractor involved with the incident is working with authorities," Sullivan wrote. 

Alaska State Troopers said the man was crushed by machinery and was not able to be resuscitated. 

The Alaska Occupational Safety and Health section with the Labor Standards & Safety Division have been notified.

Alaska State Troopers are in the process of contacting next of kin. 

No other details have been released at this time. 

The investigation is ongoing.
