Alaska Native Tara Sweeney is close to being confirmed for her new position at Indian Affairs.

Wednesday, the Senate Indian Affairs Committee held a hearing for Sweeney to become the assistant secretary.

Both Alaska Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan advocated for Sweeney's swift confirmation. Once confirmed, she will be the first Alaska Native to serve in the position.

The next step will be a vote in the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, which has not yet been scheduled.
