It’s an adventure every day.

That’s how Annette Alward, KTVA 11’s Teacher of the Week, describes her 27-year-long teaching career in the Anchorage School District.

“You never know what you’re going to get. When you walk in the door you better be ready because they are full of energy, full of questions,” said Alward.

For the last 21 years, Alward has taught second grade at Kincaid Elementary School. In her classroom, kids are encouraged to chat, share and grow academically and socially together.

"I know the noise builds up but they're learning, they're talking, they're communicating with each other and it's just fun, it's a lot of fun every day,” explained Alward. “I want their learning to be fun. I want it to be meaningful but I also want to challenge them and I think I can do that every day by working together with them.”

Her students gave her glowing reviews.

“She’s nice, funny and pretty,” said second-grader Malia Johnson.

Classmate Bobby Dance said, "If I'm having a bad day, she helps me make the bad day get better.”

Winning over her students’ hearts and minds has been a big part Alward’s success. She attributes the rest to her ability to “roll with it.”

"Just coming in with a positive attitude, coming in knowing nothing is going to work perfectly every single day and that I have this amazing staff that's supporting me when I come here to work every day," Alward said.

As the school year nears its end, Alward hopes her kids remember this time fondly, setting them up for success in the future.

"I want them to walk away remembering all those fun activities and how much they love school," she said. "Hopefully, they'll continue when they go to middle school and high school, to love school as much as they did here."

Alward spent the first six years of her career teaching at Airport Heights Elementary School.
