1 held, 2 wanted in Spenard smoke shop robbery
Anchorage Police have named the man arrested in Turnagain Tuesday evening after an armed robbery at a smoke shop, with two more people still sought in the case after two vehicles were reportedly used in their getaway.
Kevin Fisher, 24, is charged with first-degree robbery as well as third-degree theft and assault, APD spokesperson MJ Thim said in a statement Wednesday morning. He and the two other suspects -- described only as a man and a woman -- had robbed the Smoker's Choice store on the 3600 block of Minnesota Drive at about 6 p.m. They left in a white Chevrolet Impala, abandoning it near 36th Avenue and Iowa Street in favor of a blue 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada -- which also wasn't driven far.
"They crashed into a tree in the area of 35th Avenue and Vintage Circle and fled on foot," Thim wrote.
Police were out in force in the west Anchorage neighborhood near the intersection of Wiley Post Avenue and Wisconsin Street, where Thim said Fisher was taken into custody after residents saw and reported him.
"Again, thank you to the resident who saw something suspicious and called 911!" Thim wrote. "It helped us catch the suspect!"
Detectives believe that Fisher fired a shot during the robbery. No one was injured during the armed robbery or the search.
According to court documents, Fisher fired two rounds inside the tobacco shop, stole $241.56 from the cash register, and took “five to six packs of Newport cigarettes valued at $10.46 per pack.”
APD officers collected a .380 shell casing inside the store and a corresponding bullet hole in the wall six feet above ground level.
Fisher appeared in court Wednesday afternoon for an arraignment, scoring a risk level of nine out of 10 for “New Criminal Arrest” on the pretrial risk assessment tool. A score of nine on that portion of the report is labeled as moderate risk. Due to the serious and violent nature of the charges, Fisher fell into a category of “No Presumptive” own recognizance release.
The magistrate judge set a performance bail at $50,000 cash. If he is able to pay the full amount, Fisher will be assigned to pretrial supervision with ankle monitoring.
Police are seeking information on the suspects, as well as surveillance video from near 35th Avenue and Wisconsin, 36th and Iowa as well as Wiley Post and Turnagain. Anyone with information or video of the suspects is urged to call APD at 311 or contact Crime Stoppers at 907-561-STOP or through its website.
