Anchorage Police have arrested one person after a female juvenile was shot Sunday afternoon.

Around 1:30, first responders were dispatched to a residence in the 8800 block of McClellan Circle in Sand Lake.

APD says a female juvenile was shot in the upper body. She was taken to the hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening.

APD says the incident is isolated and at no point was a search for a suspect underway.

Monday morning, police said they'd arrested and charged 18-year-old Dharma Waldron with first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and fourth-degree weapon misconduct.

According to a charging document filed against Waldron, he initially told police a handgun in a backpack on his bed had fallen to the floor, then "went off and hit [his girlfriend] as she walked into the bedroom."

"Upon further investigation, officers confronted Waldron with what they knew about the trajectory of the shot," prosecutors wrote. "At that time, Waldron admitted that he picked up the gun and was playing (with) and manipulating it, put it over his shoulder and squeezed the trigger, hitting [the victim] when the gun went off."

Waldron insisted that the shooting was accidental and that he didn't know the gun was loaded.
