UAA debate team takes art of rhetoric to Silicon Valley
After winning the U.S. University Western Regional championships in late March, the University of Alaska Anchorage’s speech and debate team now heads to the Silicon Valley for the U.S. Universities Debating Championships at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.
Starting on Saturday, the Seawolves' speech and debate team will try to hold their own in the competition against 234 teams from 69 institutions covering 30 states.
UAA’s 10-person debate team includes Sam Erickson, Jacob Shercliffe, Hayley Cavitt, Robert Hockema, John Macy, Cheyenne Mathews, Stephen Kranich, Katie Bernhardt, Genevieve Mina and Sarah Gray.
While Jacob and Sam hold the cup from the Regional Championships, the whole team is to credit for their success.
The U.S. Universities debating championships and Stanford University runs through Monday April 16th.
More about the tournament is available on its website.
The Seawolves will host a top team from the Cornell Debate Society in an exhibition debate on Thursday, April 26. Tickets for that event will be available at UAAtix.com.
