Driver in deadly Wasilla wreck ran red light, police say
A 77-year-old Big Lake man died in Tuesday’s three-vehicle collision on the Parks Highway according to Wasilla police, who say the driver responsible has been arrested with further charges pending.
Edward Swanson was the passenger killed in the wreck at the Parks Highway and Church Road shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday, Wasilla police spokeswoman Amanda Graham said in a statement.
According to police, 28-year-old Glen Hamilton III was headed north on S. Mack Drive – the continuation of Church Road just south of the Parks – in a black 2004 Audi “at a high rate of speed when he failed to stop for a red traffic signal.”
The Audi then hit a 2014 Toyota Corolla, headed south on the Parks and driven by 75-year-old Donna Swanson of Big Lake. Police said the Audi also struck a 2015 GMC Sierra on Mack with an Anchorage man, 44-year-old Rene Grant, at the wheel.
Edward Swanson died at the scene.
Grant was treated at the scene by medics, while Donna Swanson and Hamilton were taken to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center for treatment. Hamilton was initially held on four warrants with a total bail of $27,500, for vehicle theft as well as failure to appear in three other burglaries, theft and assault cases.
Graham said no charges directly related to the collision had yet been filed against Hamilton, pending further investigation.
“He caused the collision and we're looking into the circumstances of that,” Graham said.
Toxicology results on Hamilton and the other drivers were still pending in the case.
