A young Palmer man is fighting for his life after his vehicle struck a moose Tuesday night, authorities say.

According to the Alaska State Troopers online dispatch, Luka Spaic, 18, was driving northbound on Palmer Fishhook Road in his 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan when a moose stepped out into the roadway. He tried what he could to not hit the moose, but was unsuccessful.

"Spaic was unable to avoid colliding with the moose which entered the passenger compartment of the vehicle and the moose died as a result of the collision," troopers wrote.

Troopers responded to the vicinity of Palmer Fishhook Road and North Sun Valley Drive just before 10 p.m. LifeMed was called to rush Spaic to Providence Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Troopers say he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision and suspect neither drugs or alcohol were factors.
