A fatal three-vehicle collision near Wasilla Tuesday afternoon led police to temporarily close the Parks Highway northbound.

Wasilla police spokeswoman Amanda Graham said one person was killed in the crash, near the Parks’ intersection with Church Road. The wreck was first reported just before 1 p.m.

Details on how the crash occurred were still pending, Graham said. Next of kin for the deceased were contacted Tuesday afternoon, with the name being withheld "out of respect."

"At this point we just want people to avoid the area," Graham said. "We're going to be investigating for a while, so the road northbound is going to be closed for a couple hours."

Ken Barkley, the Mat-Su Borough’s deputy chief of emergency services, said medics treated three people hurt in the collision.

Graham said traffic was initially able to move northbound on the Parks, but an extended closure followed as officers began photographing the scene and collecting evidence.

A detour was set up for northbound traffic along Deskas Street; the roadway reopened by 5 p.m.
