The University of Alaska Anchorage hosted a debate Saturday on Anchorage's Proposition 1, the "bathroom bill" which would restrict people's use of municipal buildings' bathrooms to their birth genders.

KTVA's Facebook page hosted a live stream of the event, which began at 1 p.m. Saturday and continued for roughly two hours.

Proposition 1 backers with Alaska Family Action have said the measure is necessary to protect people's privacy in bathrooms, submitting about 8,500 signatures to place it on this year's ballot. Mayor Ethan Berkowitz has called Prop 1 unnecessary, with a number of Anchorage business organizations forming a group to oppose it over concerns of an economic backlash against the local tourism and visitors industry.
