Anchorage Police say they have identified the man who was found dead inside a car in the Jewel Lake area on Friday.

APD says the man who was fatally shot has been identified as 28-year-old Jacob Stough.

Police spokesman MJ Thim said in a message that police had responded to the 8900 block of Dewberry Street, off Dimond Boulevard east of Jewel Lake Road. His death was originally considered suspicious Friday evening, but Thim said Saturday morning that the case is now Anchorage's fifth homicide of 2018.

"The victim was shot in the upper body," Thim wrote Saturday. "[Detectives] believe this was a targeted and drug-related crime."

According to Thim, neighbors called police shortly after 7 p.m. when they found a car parked in the middle of Dewberry a few blocks south of Dimond High School. Arriving officers found a dead man inside.

“We don’t know how long the vehicle had been parked there, but residents recognized it didn’t belong there,” Thim said.

Thim declined to say if police have identified or sought any suspects Friday evening.

Police are asking anyone with information on the death, or who has surveillance video of the area between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday, to call APD dispatchers at 907-786-8900. Information can also be submitted to Anchorage Crime Stoppers at 907-561-STOP or through its website.
