The president of the Village of Chefornak’s tribal council was killed in a snowmachine wreck late Wednesday, Alaska State Troopers said.

Word of the wreck that killed 63-year-old Walter Lewis came in just after midnight Thursday, troopers said in a Friday dispatch.

“Walter was reportedly hauling a sled of firewood behind his snowmachine across the tundra about 20 miles west of Nunapitchuk when he wrecked,” troopers wrote. “There were no witnesses to the wreck. Walter was located deceased under the loaded sled at approximately [10 p.m. Wednesday].”

Lewis was the president of the federal recognized tribe, according to the National Congress of American Indians. Troopers said his body will be sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Anchorage for an autopsy.
