Special Olympics Alaska endowment fund grows in Balamaci's honor
Dedicating his life to Special Olympics -- Jim Balamaci started as a volunteer in 1979. For the next 30 plus years, he would bring the World Winter Games to Alaska, get a state of the art training facility built in Anchorage and start a fully inclusive high school sports program.
To help ensure that work continues, an endowment fund has been set up in his honor.
"Jim wanted to have an endowment fund," said Special Olympics Board Member Paul Landes. "That was his dream, that at some point he would have these dollars set aside that ultimately could be used for a rainy day, or we could use the earnings from the fund to help offset overall costs of the program every year."
The goal is to raise over $1,000,000; in just a few weeks, they are very close to that goal with over $800,000.
