Most productions of “Cabaret” are popular among people of a certain age – but if you’ve been hangin’ tough for a fresher version, Anchorage will see a week of shows next month starring a member of New Kids on the Block.

Joey McIntyre will play the Emcee in the iconic play’s Kit Kat Club at the Atwood Concert Hall from April 24 to April 29, according to the Anchorage Concert Association. The show, made famous by Liza Minnelli’s 1972 film, depicts a 1930s Berlin nightclub against the backdrop of the Nazi Party’s rise to power.

Joel Grey won an Oscar and a Tony award for his take on the character in the Minnelli film and on Broadway. Previous stage productions of “Cabaret” have seen Alan Cumming, Neil Patrick Harris and Michael C. Hall portray the Emcee – but this one’s for the children.

McIntyre, who has helped sell 80 million records with the New Kids as the band's youngest member and as a solo artist, has also played TV and movie roles in “Boston Legal” and “The Heat.” He said Friday that he’s planning to prepare for his Alaska appearance step by step.

“I humbly take the reins of one of the most important shows of the last 100 years,” McIntyre said. “I can’t wait to help audiences ‘leave their troubles outside’ and draw them into the world of Cabaret. I’m thrilled to come up to Alaska and give you a wild night at the Kit Kat Klub.”

A promotion marking Minnelli’s birthday, starting at 9 a.m. Monday on the concert association’s website, will offer 200 opening-night tickets for half off their regular price.
