Runners are lining up to run in Seward’s world-famous Mount Marathon Race, as a one-month registration period to take on Alaska’s toughest footrace begins Thursday.

The top 225 finishers from the previous year’s July 4 race up and down Mount Marathon are guaranteed spots in the 91st annual event if they register before the March 31 deadline, Seward Chamber of Commerce officials said Thursday in a statement. People who have run Mount Marathon and completed 10 or more races overall will also receive a spot, if one is available when they do so.

Organizers say many racers, including first-time Mount Marathon contenders, were “waiting at the stroke of midnight on March 1” to apply for a lottery spot.

Applications can be made on the race’s website, where winners of the lottery spots will be announced in early April.
