Seward inmate, 30, dies in DOC custody
A 30-year-old inmate died Saturday while in the custody of the Department of Corrections.
Around 3:30, Romeo Iyapana was pronounced deceased at Alaska Regional in Anchorage.
Iyapana began demonstrating concerning medical symptoms Saturday morning while housed in a cell alone at the Spring Creek Correctional Center in Seward. He was taken to the prison's medical ward for evaluation before being transported to Seward Providence Medical Center about an hour after he began exhibiting symptoms.
A short time later, Iyapana was flown to Anchorage for further medical treatment.
According to a department spokesperson, Iyapana has been in DOC custody since September 2007, serving time on the charges of first-degree sexual assault, as well as second-degree and fourth-degree assault.
Iyapana's cause of death has not yet been released. The Medical Examiner's Office and Alaska State Troopers will conduct a review.
Iyapana's death marks the DOC's first inmate death of 2018.
