Suspect arrested following middle school burglary in Juneau
A Juneau man was arrested over the weekend after breaking into a middle school and causing over $4,000 in damages, authorities say.
According to a release sent by Lieutenant Krag Campbell of the Juneau Police Department, 34-year-old Shawn T. Beaird broke into the Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School, located at 1600 Renninger Drive Saturday night.
At 8:16 p.m., JPD received a report of a burglary in progress at the middle school. When they arrived, Beaird attempted to flee and resist officers but was eventually detained, police say.
Lieutenant Campbell said Beaird made forced entry and caused thousands of dollars in damages.
"Investigation showed that Beaird had forcibly entered the school, damaged property inside the school which is estimated to be valued at about $4,500, and stolen a small amount of cash," the release said.
Beaird was arrested and taken to the Lemon Creek Correctional Center. He faces multiple charges including burglary, criminal mischief, theft and violating conditions of release for a prior burglary arrest in January.
