APD arrests 2 from stolen car at Taco Bell drive-thru
Anchorage police were able to take a bite out of crime at a fast-food restaurant near Merrill Field Thursday morning, when officers tracked a stolen vehicle to its drive-thru lane.
A member of Facebook group Anchorage Scanner JOE recorded officers arresting two people from the vehicle at the Taco Bell restaurant on East 5th Avenue near Reeve Boulevard, in video posted to the group.
The stolen white sedan was spotted by an APD officer being driven in traffic near Mountain View Drive and Taylor Street just after 9:30 a.m. Thursday, police spokeswoman Renee Oistad said in an email.
“The officer followed the vehicle while other officers responded to the area,” Oistad wrote. “The traffic stop took place at Taco Bell.”
Caitlin Elam, the Scanner JOE member who recorded the stop on video, said she was “impressed” by the speed of the arrest.
“APD did a solid job,” Elam wrote in her Facebook post. “In and out in less than 30 – I don’t think even some fast food restaurants can boast that kind of service some days!”
Izy Viloria, the Taco Bell’s manager, said responding officers told her they took a female driver and a male passenger into custody from the vehicle.
“They saw them go through the drive-thru lane so they blocked it,” Viloria said. “They were almost at the order station but they didn’t get to order.”
One of the suspects had an outstanding warrant, Oistad said, but full police reports on the suspects’ names and the charges against them were pending Thursday afternoon.
