A natural gas line which was struck by an excavator Thursday morning briefly closed a heavily traveled section of Dowling Road, according to Anchorage firefighters.

Jodie Hettrick, the Anchorage Fire Department’s operations chief, said crews responded to Napa Auto Parts at 1130 E. Dowling Rd., between the Seward Highway and Old Seward Highway.

“We received the call at about 9:41 (a.m.) which was an odor in the air,” Hettrick said.

Enstar spokeswoman Lindsay Hobson said employees from the natural gas utility had responded and secured the damaged line.

Anchorage police said Dowling was closed near the line break, but had reopened to traffic by 10:30 a.m.

Anyone planning underground work can receive information about buried utility lines by calling 811.
