Anchorage police are asking people to avoid a road in the Ship Creek area near Downtown due to a water main break Wednesday afternoon.

Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility spokesman Chris Kosinski said the break, in the 800 block of East Whitney Road, was reported at about 1:30 p.m.

“We think there's a 12-inch cast-iron water main that's susceptible to the break,” Kosinski said. “There's quite a bit of water coming out, and that's all we know now.”

APD said drivers should avoid the road between Post Road and North C Street while crews conduct repairs.

"As a result, the water mains in Government Hill, North Pointe Subdivision, Panoramic View Apartments and the Port of Anchorage will have low pressure until AWWU can get mainline valves turned off and isolate the break," police wrote in a statement.

Around 2:40, AWWU said the broken main had been located and turned off. Water pressure was then restored to impacted areas, though AWWU still advises motorists to avoid East Whitney Road.

Crews on the scene said water main breaks happen from time-to-time due to cold and underground vibrations.
