Firefighters are responding to a Tuesday fire at a scrap-metal business in the Ship Creek area.

Jodie Hettrick, the Anchorage Fire Department’s operations chief, said the fire was called in at 11:25 a.m. from Alaska Scrap and Recycling on 720 E. Whitney Road.

“The fire is at that location,” Hettrick said. “It doesn’t appear to be their actual building.”

Hettrick said no injuries were reported during the fire, which started in shipping containers outside the business.

“It was a couple of conexes that are filled with all kinds of diesel fuel and oil items used in maintenance like that,” Hettrick said. “It’s going to smolder for a while because of the materials inside, so people are going to see smoke.”

There was runoff from the fire, Hettrick said, but no reported impact to Ship Creek. The Environmental Protection Agency has been notified as a precaution, she said.

AFD has asked people to stay clear of the area.
