A domestic dispute early Saturday in Juneau left a man severely injured and a woman charged with assaulting him, according to police.

The call which led to 40-year-old Melanie Whalen’s arrest came in just before 3:15 a.m., police said in a statement, reporting a disturbance downtown on the 300 block of Gastineau Avenue.

“The caller reported the disturbance was between his neighbors, that it sounded to be physical, and that someone might have been stabbed,” police wrote.

Officers responding to the home involved found the victim, a 28-year-old man with wounds to his left arm and torso, as well as Whalen. The victim was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital, where he was in serious but stable condition Saturday morning.

“The investigation showed that the [victim] and Whalen are known to each other and the disturbance was a domestic dispute,” police wrote. “A knife that was believed to have been used in the assault was located inside the residence.”

Whalen was taken to the Lemon Creek Correctional Center, where she was held without bail on a charge of first-degree assault.
