Anchorage Police say an alert citizen helped them apprehend a knifepoint robbery suspect earlier this week.

APD was called to the Carrs on Huffman in south Anchorage Monday night around 9:15 on reports of a robbery.

Renee Oistad, APD spokesperson, says 35-year-old Chase Walters stole groceries and then pulled a knife on the store security guard when he was confronted in the parking lot.

Walters then left the area in a blue Saturn, Oistad says.

A citizen witnessed the incident and followed the Saturn while calling the police. With the citizen's help, officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle behind the Dimond Center Hotel and conduct a traffic stop.

Oistad says the driver of the Saturn complied with officer commands but Walters fled the vehicle on foot. He was quickly apprehended, she says.

Walters was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery, third-degree assault and third-degree theft. He also had an outstanding warrant, Oistad says.

APD says the driver of the Saturn wasn't aware of the robbery.
