Former Alaska Governor Tony Knowles is resigning from his position as chair of the National Park System Advisory Board.

He says Interior Secretary Ryan Zinkie and the Trump Administration aren't supporting the board's programs, prompting nine of the board's 12 members resigned.

Knowles submitted his letter of resignation to Zinkie on Tuesday.

In the letter, Knowles says the board has waited for the chance to meet and talk with the Department of the Interior as prescribed by law, but they've not been called to meet.

He also outlined the actions the board has taken over the last seven years, including emphasizing scientific research and mitigating climate change.

Knowles says the advisory board had good working relationships with the past two secretaries of the interior and the previous National Park director.
