A man was found dead late Monday in Juneau near the bridge across Gastineau Channel, according to local police.

Lt. Krag Campbell said in a statement that a report came in just before midnight that the body of 36-year-old Anthony N. Malacaro had been found on the 3500 block of the North Douglas Highway on Douglas Island.

“The cause of death appears to be from a gunshot and a handgun was recovered from close proximity to the body,” Campbell wrote. “The preliminary investigation shows that no foul play is suspected in the cause of death.”

The Juneau Empire said Malacaro was an employee of the newspaper.

Malacaro’s next of kin have been notified, and his body will undergo an autopsy at the state medical examiner’s office in Anchorage.
