People in Wasilla will no longer have the option of paper or plastic.

Monday night, the Wasilla City Council voted 5 to 1 to ban one-time use disposable shopping bags. Councilors say it's an effort to cut down on litter.

Despite the landfill's best efforts to keep trash contained, plastic bags are known for getting caught up in the Valley's high winds and polluting surrounding areas.

The council took several rounds of public testimony before making its decision. The only council member to vote against it was Tim Burney. The City Clerk says the meeting was packed, with most comments in favor of the ban.

The ban goes into effect July 1.
