'Suspicious' fire damages elementary school
A fire at an elementary school that is estimated to have left behind several hundred thousand dollars in damages is being called suspicious by fire investigators.
Right at 12:30 Sunday morning, a 911 caller reported smoke and flames at College Gate Elementary School in the 3000 block of Sunflower Street.
Within minutes, Anchorage Fire was on the scene. AFD says the school's sprinkler system managed to contain the blaze to just one classroom-- the location of origin. The fire was considered under control within about 20 minutes of the original 911 call.
While only one classroom was damaged, investigators say the room had significant fire, smoke and water damage to its contents but little damage to structural components. However, the damages are estimated to be in the several hundred thousand dollar range.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but AFD says it's suspicious in nature.
The Anchorage School District says their operations crews will continue cleanup throughout the break and the classroom and school are expected to be ready when school resumes after the break.
No injuries were reported.
