The Soldotna High School cheerleaders are in step as they get ready to hit the road for a trip to Florida.

"I'm really excited to go down there for New Year's -- who wouldn't want to be in Disney World for New Year's?" asked Saryn Sproul, the squad's co-captain.

Sproul and her Soldotna Stars teammates will spend New Year's Day in Orlando at the Citrus Bowl, as participants in the pre-game festivities.

"There's probably going to be probably 80,000 people watching," Sproul said.

Soldotna's cheerleading squad is the first from Alaska invited to take part in a college bowl game. It's the second trip to Orlando in a month for Sproul and co-captain Joanna Cornelius, who took part in a national cheerleaders' camp which earned Soldotna a spot at the Citrus Bowl.

The Stars had previously turned down an invite to participate in the New Year's Day parade in London, England. Only three SoHi cheerleaders would have gone overseas for that event, but for the Citrus Bowl all nine cheerleaders and their parents will make the trip.

"During New Year's, that's kind of scary to me -- not to be with my mom or something, all the way in London," Sproul said.

"I'm going to be a lot more confident, more ready," Cornelius said, as the Stars prepare to shine on their biggest stage.
